Reality Check
- Everyone is exposed to traumatic experiences – children and adults.
- Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17 years) – for example, abuse, neglect, violence in the home or community, parent’s divorce, health trauma.
- ACEs are common. About 61% of adults surveyed across 25 states reported experiencing at least one type of ACE before age 18, and 1 in 6 reported experiencing 4 or more types of ACEs. (Center for Disease Control and Protection)
- Nearly 14% of children repeatedly experienced maltreatment by a caregiver, including nearly 4 % who experienced physical abuse (National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention)
- The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) reports that every 9 seconds in the US a woman is assaulted or
- Many people come to the Church or faith community with psychological trauma, deep fears, sorrows, emotional pain, and concerns that often remain unexpressed in worship and fellowship. Many are also psychologically hurt in Church.
