About Healing Joy Wellness

Healing Joy Wellness, Inc. is a tax-exempt non-profit organization that promotes mind-body-spirit wellness. The company was formed on May 14, 2020, under New York state laws and is headed by Dr. Carol Mills Kamara, known as Dr. Carol. It is a source of wholistic support for communities of faith. We help churches and other faith communities develop trauma-informed ministries, train and support ministers, staff, and other members of the Church or faith community.

Dr. Carol and her partners envision a world where everyone feels better, exercises more, eats healthier, lives on purpose, and experiences real joy. They believe that promoting mind, body and spirit health provides a pathway to this world.

Sunflowers symbolize life, love, loyalty, joy, and hope.

We’re helping churches and other faith communities develop trauma-informed ministries…and providing opportunities to connect in safe spaces.

Let our experience work for you!

Meet Dr. Carol Mills Kamara

Dr. Carol is a trauma and change specialist, and a human vessel doing divine work.  Here is her “WHY” …

She knows what it feels like to be rejected, displaced, not being seen, not being known, not being heard, not being understood. Apart from her own experience with trauma, she has over 30 years’ experience serving adults and families within churches, the New York State Child Welfare System and private practice with adults.

Her marriage to a divorced man resulted in her being demoted and sidelined by her church. Her husband, who is also a member of the church, struggled to cope with this very painful situation. Serving in the church was a major part of their lives and they did not want to leave their beloved congregation.

Having served at various levels of leadership in the church, including vice-chairperson of the Executive Board and director of Equipping and Leadership Development, Dr. Carol worked at being a translator of trauma to the leaders of her church, helping to increase understanding of the impact of trauma and helpful, caring ways to respond. She understands church dynamics and the “hidden” life of the congregation.

Dr. Carol is a New York State Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Her educational and professional pursuits have focused on healing trauma, social justice, and leadership development. She earned her Doctoral degree from Nyack University – Alliance Theological Seminary where she studied leadership, ministry and the intersections of ministry, trauma, and spirituality. Her doctoral dissertation, titled Do No Harm, Trauma-Informed Lens for Trauma-Informed Ministry, focuses on the intersectionality of trauma and ministry and how to create higher levels of trauma awareness and implement trauma-informed practices. She also earned a Master of Social Work degree from Fordham University; Master of Divinity from New York Theological Seminary; and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from City University of New York (CUNY) – York College.

Dr. Carol is uniquely called, knowledgeable and trained to assess systems and people. Let her and her partners serve you.
